A large herding animal, Panoptes live in matriarchal societies headed by the eldest female, who has also fathered the offspring of its herd. Hermaphrodites, the Panoptes can undergo a gender metamorphosis. Yet this transition is undergone through specific stages of its life and by social status in a hierarchy. While a chick maybe born male, during his bachelor years lived amongst other bachelors, if he takes a submissive role or is dominated by others in the herd it is very likely that he will become female and become prized and fought over by the other males. At which point through a process of elimination all others of the herd will become female leaving on dominant male of the herd. once mated the dominant male will transform into a female and run the herd. while male born chicks are expelled from the herd, female chicks will remain part of their birth group. During sexual maturity the female will undergo transformation to male where he is now able to either form a herd of his own or simply mate with females of other herds.
